DEET, a Chemical Mosquito Repellant Causes Neurological
Damage
People are buying insect repellent products made with DEET,
which is sprayed on their skin, and eating food after they have spread this on
their bodies with their bare hands. DEET is quite effective at repelling
insects such as but rising questions remain about the health consequences of
using these products.
The environmental protection agency has said officially that
DEET is not harmful when used as directed. However, they are also claiming that
these products are not absorbed through the skin. Of course they do not
question the other products such as Nicoderm.
How does it work if the skin does not absorb anything into the blood
stream? Once DEET enters the bloodstream it makes its way to the nervous system,
where it is known to cause seizures. It can be in particular harmful to
children.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than
one application of DEET per day for children - in other words, they're saying
it's okay to poison your children but just a bit at a time. Rat studies at The
Duke University Medical Center has shown that use of DEET kills brain neurons.
If you are interested in protecting your health, and don't
want to end up with cancer or liver damage simply use soybean oil insect
repellants. I’m not saying they are as effective as DEET but they do work and
what is important is that they will not threaten your health.
