My Views – 5 Common New Age Misconceptions

Recently there was an article posted on Facebook to bring awareness of the "new age" ideologies. The writer goes to say, "Some ideologies New Ageism preaches are misleading, false, and even dangerous." Followed by 5 topics which I will go through and examine. The writer’s first point says:

"Ignore The Negative - Many people have been mislead to believe that you give power to something that is harmful simply by putting your attention upon it and becoming aware of it. Therefore, you should never pay attention to, or talk about anything that is negative."

My view: it is not stated for you to "ignore" the negative, but not place your focus on it. The matter of giving power to what you focus on is not a newly founded thought and one that has been around for ages, and whether the writer would like to approve or deny it, it would be nothing more than a personal choice, yet proven by science. I would encourage the writer to expand his/her horizons by reading all scientific articles from medical to quantum physics to see the most recent findings on the topic of focus. Even if I give a simple example, it is focus of light through magnifying glass that not only does not prepare against harmful effects or negative outcome, but burn down what is being focused on severely.

Looking objectively at a critical situation or information is possible without compulsive focus and the anxiety that it may bring about.

Second point: "Never Get Angry - Many people have adopted the notion that anger is something to overcome or shut out completely. They categorize anger into the negative basket, and instead promote replacing it with feelings of peace, love and light. The danger in this is it creates apathy and passivity to the injustices happening in our world today."

My view: the writer yet again misquotes the words in saying, "never get angry". Anger is one of the series of emotions available to human species. It is not because it is considered "negative" that one needs to find love, peace and light, but it is due to the fact that anger just like any other emotion secretes relative hormones.

When we get angry, the heart rate, arterial tension and testosterone production increases, cortisol (the stress hormone) decreases, and the left hemisphere of the brain becomes more stimulated. This is indicated by a new investigation that analyzes the changes in the brain's cardiovascular, hormonal and asymmetric activation response when we get angry. Unfortunately, the heart attack and the stroke that may follow in the individual, will not subside the writers so called view of injustices that are happening in the world today. The angered individual goes through series of ailments, gets super- medicated and eventually transitions, but at least as per writers suggestion he has not been passive about it.

The writer goes further to describe in detail how our moral guidance system cannot tolerate watching an innocent be tortured, and draw on the readers emotions to justify his/her points, without reading a single finding or suggestion in the field of quantum physics and the qualities of energy and frequency, to understand that all he/she is focusing on is easily explained within the field, without even engaging any emotions and in a matter of fact and scientific manner.

Third point: "There Is No Right And Wrong - A common, widespread misconception is that there is no such thing as right and wrong, and that the concept of right and wrong is “dualistic” and therefore invalid. Furthermore, many who have been convinced that there is no objective right and wrong will often try to convince people (and themselves) that everything is OK."

My view: yet again the writer is misinformed. This is not due to any dualistic ideas but the simplicity of this matter escapes many. Simply because we are brought up to believe that we can be judge and jury. As we grow up, we carry a bag with two compartments. We decide depending on our environment what topic belongs to which side of the bag and as the bag gets heavier, so does our power of judgement. Trying to differentiate the right from wrong is nothing but a personal matter and a unanimous handshake. We cannot in truth distinguish which is which, but we agree that if we do it and it harms something or someone, then it is wrong. We create the law. You cannot blame electricity for electrocuting someone. It does as it is supposed to. You cannot say it was wrong. The world of energy, does not create or produce wrong, every production is a right one, but you have the right to judge it as wrong "for yourself" if it does not suit "you".

As well in this part of the article the writer yet again reaches out to stir up audience emotion by referring to all that he/she focuses on, in saying, "We are living in times of great injustice, violence, inequality and preventable suffering." Interestingly this writer has a grim view of the world and all the beauty around is completely escaping him/ her. This person would be one that would definitely focus on the broken wall in the garden and not the amazing flowers that surrounds him/her.

Fourth point: "There Is No Truth; Perception = Reality - Many people have adopted the idea that you can never really know the ultimate truth about the reality we live in. This is also known as solipsism; the ideology that only one’s own mind and perceptions are sure to exist. Another common misunderstanding passed around is, Perception is reality or reality is perception.”

My view: Solipsism, comes from Latin solus, meaning "alone", and ipse, meaning "self", is the philosophical idea that only one's own mind is sure to exist. Solipsism holds the idea that knowledge of anything outside one's own mind is unsure; the external world and other minds cannot be known and might not exist outside the mind. As a metaphysical position, solipsism goes further to the conclusion that the world and other minds may not exist. Can you prove that it does? Has there been any research to negate that? Quite the contrary there has been much findings on the area of the flat world being rolled out as you move along and the theory of the entire world within a sugar cube. Having said that, now immediate question to the writer would be, how is this relevant to the topic you have discussed?

Secondly, if your perception was not your reality, the medical notions of placebo and nacebo effects, practiced on daily basis, and proven scientifically, would be out the window. Even simpler than that, the fact that imagining a sour lemon, gets the saliva gushing through your mouth and throat, is obviously not your mind and perception at work is it? Two people describing the same event two different ways, and being emotionally and physically affected is not perception is it? I guess the writer did not research the word perception.

Fifth point: "What You Resist Persists… So Don’t Resist - A very common belief in the New Age movement is that one should overcome ‘resistance.’ The natural urge to resist almost anything has been coined as negative or detrimental to our happiness and health amongst spiritual individuals and new-agers. We are taught to overcome resistance using spiritual techniques like meditation, yoga and acceptance. We are also taught that what we resist… will persist."

My view: seriously? You would even dare to question the law of resistance? Lol. In this I will not even go as far as discussing electricity but just bring to the attention of the writer the fact that we have been for years fighting and resisting the idea of war and world hunger. Are they gone yet, or have they gotten worse? We have been resisting and fighting cancer, aids, Ebola, cardiovascular ailments, etc. etc. Which of these have lessened in quantity? Is our resistance giving us more power over them? Please read few of medical journals to bring yourself up to date on the number of infertile women whom as long as they are resisting the infertility, they remain so and as they accept the fact and release resistance, they become pregnant. If someone is handing you a million dollars, would you be getting it if you resisted it? No, you will persist to be in the same financial position as before due to resistance.

I suggest, in the future if you have anything to publish or say, let it be your views and perceptions only without attacking what you have so little knowledge of. A little knowledge can be quite dangerous my friend.

Live in Light!
EL
